Persecution of Christians in Algeria Escalates This Year Source: www.win1040.com Date: May 31, 2019 Photo by Daoud Abismail on Unsplash PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS IN ALGERIA ESCALATES THIS YEAR Christian churches are locked down, Believers are threatened and beaten, homes are invaded, Bibles are confiscated and destroyed, pastors are imprisoned - - You ask where? Modern day Algeria. The Muslim persecution of Christian Believers has drastically escalated since 2017. Algeria uses ‘building safety” committees to close churches indefinitely. It is also virtually impossible for Christians to open new churches. Where do Christians go to worship? They meet secretly in homes that are kept dark and shuttered. Should authorities suspect them and forcefully enter, the small group of worshipers declare that they are eating a meal together. Algeria is a former French colony, and the French government is so disturbed by this new intolerance that the French Parliament has officially opened an inquiry into persecution of Christians in Algeria. Previously, churches had to ask the government for permission to open a church, and after receiving permission, they had the legal, proper documents. All of that is gone. Believers have been forced to go “underground.” A local pastor of an evangelical church wrote that they “recently had a series of visits by the authorities to check that our church hall is appropriate for religious activities.” They found no fault; nevertheless, shortly later, armed police came saying they had received orders to shut the whole building and seal all the doors. Christian Believers have little options. Appeal to authorities goes nowhere. The church has basically been forced to go underground. Officially, the number of Christians is 125,000, but in reality there are many more forced to live a “hidden” Christian life. Islam requires families to kill a member who becomes a Christian Believer. Despite this increased persecution, mission agencies report that the Church is growing in Algeria. Praise the Lord! The nation of Algeria has increased to number 22 on the 2019 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Window International Network partners pray for Algeria on Day 23 by following the Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar. Let us pray for: Christian Believers to stand strong in the face the increased persecution and closure of their churches (The Bible, Revelation 3:10). Christian pastors who are imprisoned to be sustained by the Holy Spirit and to return good to their persecutors, hopefully winning some of them to the Lord (The Bible, 1 Thessalonians 5:15). Muslim Background Christian Believers to be strengthened in their witness to family members and also be divinely protected from retaliation, persecution, and even death (The Bible, 1 Corinthians 16:13).
