Afghanistan (MNN) — The U.S. and 97 other countries announced a deal with the Taliban, assuring the continued evacuation of Afghan allies after the August 31 deadline. This includes any Afghans who worked with the U.S. military.

The Taliban has promised to not interfere. The U.S. believes it has enough leverage over the Taliban to ensure a safe transfer.

Meanwhile, some of these refugees have begun arriving in the United States. Last week, several arrived at a military base in Virginia. One girl arrived without her parents. Another woman had given birth just before leaving Kabul.

Tent Schools

Anne Hamming of Tent Schools International says, “As the educational needs become evident, we will be looking and listening to try to find a partner to help directly with the educational needs abroad. And when they are resettled here in the US, we will be partnering with our local resettlement agencies (really with any Midwestern resettlement agency) to support them with educational technology.”

Tent Schools works with refugee students overseas in places like Lebanon and Jordan, but they also provide used laptops for resettled students here in the U.S. You can join this work by donating to Tent Schools here.

And ask God to rest upon those fleeing Afghanistan. Hamming says while they may be in danger, it is still a difficult choice for Afghans to leave their homeland. Many leave behind have large networks of family or friends. “If we had to pick up and run for our safety, how many people might we feel we need to take with us? It doesn’t take long to see how chaotic and just heartbreaking it could be to have to leave someone behind, a brother or a sister.”
