Myanmar (International Christian Concern) – Two days after a Catholic church in Kayah state was attacked by the Burmese Army (Tatmadaw) in an airstrike, the junta again launched another airstrike against a convent in the same township.

On March 10, 2022, the Tatmadaw struck a building, convent, and hospital of the Sisters of Reparation, severely damaging the roof, windows, and ceiling of the convent, used as a retirement home and hospital for elderly nuns in Doungankha village in Demoso township.

Two military aircraft bombed Demoso township around 6 a.m. on Thursday and the convent was struck, according to local sources. The convent is next to Our Lady, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, another place of worship hit by military artillery fire last June.

In the diocese of Loikaw, in eastern Kayah State, the Tatmadaw hit at least eight churches in air strikes. According to Catholic News World, so far, the following churches have been targeted and attacked by the junta

(Loikaw Diocese, 2021-2022)

  1. Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kayan Tharyar
  2. Mary Queen of Peace, Daw Ngan Kha
  3. St. Joseph, Demoso
  4. Our Lady of Lourdes, 6 Mile
  5. Immaculate Conception of Mary, Hpruso
  6. Christ the King Cathedral, Loikaw (raiding and looting)
  7. Sacred Heart of Jesus, Daw Oo Khu (2022.01.13)
  8. Our Lady of Fatima, Saung Du Lar (2022.03.08)

(Phekon Diocese, 2021)

Asia News reports that as in the war in Ukraine, the anti-coup forces are asking the world for a ban on the sale of oil to the Tatmadaw. “Without fuel, the army cannot use its air force,” said Zin Mar Aung, foreign minister of the National Unity Government, formed by deposed Myanmar politicians and other pro-democracy allies. “If their jets can’t fly, they can’t bomb. It’s very simple.”
