Throughout my life, I have always found comfort in Psalm 91:

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty…

Even during multiple incidents of discrimination and physical assaults, I have found strength in saying: ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’

As tomorrow is the second Sunday of Advent, will you join me in lifting up a special prayer for the people of Afghanistan? It is inspired by Psalm 91:

God of refuge,

We bring before you the people of Afghanistan: those who remain under the oppression of the Taliban, and those who have been forced to flee, leaving loved ones and homes behind.

Be with them and deliver them in this time of great trouble (Psalm 91:15).

God of rescue,

We pray special protection over Afghan refugees, especially those in neighbouring countries like Iran and Pakistan, who may face further danger for being religious, ethnic or sectarian minorities.

Guard them day and night, and provide the help they desperately need.

Father God,

We remember the children living as refugees, without adequate healthcare or education. Give them peace when they are fearful and a safe place to grow up.

Lord, fill their hearts with hope for a brighter future – for these children and for everyone who has been touched by the humanitarian crisis. May the world take notice and take action in the year ahead.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
