Together we have been calling for Pastor Lorenzo’s freedom since 11 July 2021, when he was violently arrested in Cuba while peacefully protesting. Among other things, we have documented evidence and raised his case with experts at the United Nations – and now we have seen some recent progress.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has adopted an opinion on the case, ruling that Pastor Lorenzo’s imprisonment meets their definition of arbitrary detention. In fact, they said it contravenes nine different Articles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
This confirms that there was no justifiable basis for arrest, and Pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo should not be in prison.
The international recognition of this injustice is a significant breakthrough! Now we pray that this will increase pressure on the Cuban government to release Pastor Lorenzo, immediately and unconditionally. The UN Working Group also called for reparations to be made, and for a full, independent investigation into his unjust detention.
Meanwhile, there were more protests in Cuba last month, due to the lack of freedom, scarcity of food and electrical blackouts.
These protests were met with violence and mass detentions, but thankfully all those detained were subsequently released. We know this because of the brave reporting of religious leaders, including local pastors. Please keep them in your prayers.
In summary, please pray:
- Giving thanks for the progress in Pastor Lorenzo’s case, and that his story is being heard at an international level.
- That the Cuban government put the recommendations of the UN Working Group into action – releasing Pastor Lorenzo immediately and unconditionally.
- That UN Member States will hold the Cuban government to account if it fails to do so.
- For the safety of local pastors, religious leaders and others who bravely report on violations of justice in Cuba.
