It’s been more than four years since Myanmar’s military seized power in a coup, and attacks on Christians are escalating.

Draw on these words from Psalm 3 to help you pray today. We also think of those in both Myanmar and Thailand who were affected by yesterday’s earthquake.

‘But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.’ (Psalm 3:3)

‘From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people.’ (Psalm 3:8)

On Sunday 16 March, soldiers set fire to St Patrick’s Cathedral in Banmaw (Kachin State) during military operations, badly damaging this significant landmark.

It took place shortly before the celebration of Saint Patrick's Day (the cathedral’s patron saint) and just weeks after the military demolished the priest’s residence, the diocesan offices, and a high school located on its grounds.

This is part of a larger, increasing trend of violence directed at religious groups in Myanmar/Burma – particularly Christians:

  • On 6 February, junta airstrikes destroyed the Sacred Heart Church in Chin State.
  • On 3 March, a junta bombing raid resulted in the destruction of the pastoral centre at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Kachin State.
  • On 16 March, a junta airstrike targeted a monastery in Shan State. At least nine people who were seeking refuge there died, including six Buddhist monks.

Religious institutions serve as more than just a space for worship. They are often vital sanctuaries for displaced people seeking refuge.

  • Please pray for those who have lost not only a place of spiritual significance, but somewhere to find shelter and aid amid ongoing violence.

We also pray:

  • For an end to the military’s deliberate targeting of Christian communities and other religious groups.
  • That the military junta will be held to account for every egregious violation of human rights and international humanitarian law.
  • That the international community will not stay silent, but would do all they can to guarantee justice for the people of Myanmar
