After being imprisoned for their Christian witness in Communist Romania, Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand founded The Voice of the Martyrs in 1967 to serve persecuted Christians in the world’s most difficult and dangerous places to follow Christ.
Today, Christians are still persecuted in Communist countries like Laos. Soon after coming to faith in Christ, Kham La began to face pressure from local officials in his district of Laos. They demanded he renounce his faith or leave the village. Kham La had been sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and the story of his conversion in his village and in the markets. Many people were interested in the gospel and became Christians. Soon, other villages where he proclaimed the gospel also began to apply pressure, threatening to ban him. For three years, police summoned him for questioning every few months. They presented him with a written renunciation of his Christian faith and demanded he sign it. After refusing each time, he was threatened with expulsion and mocked for his foolishness in refusing to sign the documents. “I wasn’t afraid,” Kham La said. “I just stayed strong and faithful and didn’t sign.” On Aug. 8, 2022, Laotian authorities arrested Kham La without explanation or charge and locked him in a tiny, windowless cell. He was later moved to a larger cell with 61 other inmates and immediately began sharing the gospel with his fellow prisoners. Several weeks after his arrest, Kham La was released. During his time in prison, other Christians had faced increasing pressure. They said that police had taunted them about Kham La’s arrest and imprisonment, warning them that the same thing would happen to them if they didn’t stop following Christ. Kham La continues to pray for the 61 men he ministered to in jail. “Thank God that I got arrested,” he said. “I was never upset about that. In fact, I am happy. God gave me a good experience in prison.” You can stand with persecuted Christians in Communist countries who, like Kham La, are targeted for their faith in Christ. Your gifts provide direct support for Christians whose family members have been imprisoned for their witness, ministry tools for front-line workers proclaiming the gospel in Communist countries, and other help.
