From House Church Raids to US Soil: CCP's Escalating Transnational Attacks on Faith and Freedom
ChinaAid is raising concerns that a series of incidents involving critics of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) may signal an escalation in transnational repression following the July 1 implementation of China's new Ethnic Unity and Progress Law. The new law could broaden Beijing's authority to pursue organizations and individuals outside mainland China.
Within two weeks of the law taking effect, four notable incidents involving prominent CCP critics in Taiwan and the United States raised fresh questions about whether Beijing's overseas pressure campaign may be entering a more aggressive phase.
Four Reported Incidents of Alleged Repression:
I. Violent Assault on Taiwanese-Japanese Journalist Akio Yaita
On July 6, renowned journalist Akio Yaita (矢板明夫), a dual citizen of Taiwan and Japan and one of the best-known critics of the CCP in the Chinese-speaking world, was violently assaulted in Taichung, Taiwan. Taiwanese law enforcement immediately launched an investigation and arrested the alleged assailant.
II. Home of Rev. Zhang Boli Ransacked in Southern California
On Sunday, July 12, while preaching at church, Rev. Zhang Boli, a U.S. citizen, returned home to discover that his residence in Corona, California, had been systematically burglarized and completely ransacked, as Boli recounted in a recent video and in a letter to public officials.
III. Cross-Border Coercion Against Overseas Christians
Following the July 11 mass raids against house churches in Yueyang, Hunan Province, senior officials from the Yueyang Public Security Bureau reportedly warned the husband of Texas resident Zhang Mei that unless his wife and daughter returned to China, his retirement pension could be jeopardized.
IV. Brutal Assault on Democracy Activist Jie Lijian in New York
On July 15, Jie Lijian, Chairman of the China Democracy Party International Alliance, was brutally attacked by three unidentified men in Flushing, New York, per multiple news reports. He suffered severe head injuries, remained unconscious in intensive care for more than two days, and continues recovering.
ChinaAid views reported CCP transnational repression as a growing threat to U.S. democratic institutions, the rights of Americans, and the rule of law.
Bob Fu's Open Letter: "The American People Have a Right to Know" About CCP Election Meddling
Rev. Dr. Bob Fu, founder of ChinaAid, released an open letter addressing newly declassified U.S. government documents that detail the Chinese Communist Party's interference in American elections, including alleged acquisition of 220 million voter records. Flight to Freedom Denied: Thailand Detains UN Refugee
Ms. Zhang Xinyan, a longtime Falun Gong practitioner and United Nations-recognized refugee, was prevented from boarding her flight to Canada on July 8, 2026. After fleeing persecution in China in 2014 and completing all emergency resettlement procedures, including interviews, medical exams, and biometrics, she was stopped at Bangkok’s departure gate and taken to the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center.
