France (MNN) – What started as a student protest in France has become something much harder to define – and dispel.

Youth demonstrations over the last week were sparked by poor school conditions. But it has exploded into widespread unrest.

Over 6,000 have been arrested,  mostly minors. Hundreds of schools have closed, and rioters have set fires and attacked police and teachers. At least 715 police officers and 215 young people have been injured.

Anna Mosimi with PHARE FM, a partner of Trans World Radio, says the original protests have now attracted teens carrying all kinds of anger and agendas.

“I think a lot of the young people, for them it’s kind of an excuse to join into a movement where they can express the things that they don’t agree with,” says Mosimi. “A lot of those young people who are violent on the street against the police are usually also kids that don’t go to school anymore.

“It’s not the same fight. So everyone is kind of fighting for their own cause.”

It doesn’t help that France’s economy is crumbling under a heavy debt burden, sluggish growth, and political uncertainty.

Mosimi explains, “There’s an overall situation in France where we are really not certain where we are going…. The younger generation sees their parents or grandparents already struggling, and they’re like, ‘Okay, what’s for us? What’s the future for us?’”

Christians in France are responding to teens’ questions and angst with Gospel hope. PHARE FM broadcasts via radio and online across France with contemporary Christian music and short-form programming, reaching millions with the Good News of Jesus.

“For this younger generation that’s on the street, there is hope for them,” says Mosimi. “The Church in France [and] the ministries of PHARE FM as well need to be ready to welcome that younger generation that is hungry for sense in their life.”

As unrest continues, Mosimi asks Christians to respond with prayer for France.

“Pray for peace, for the Lord to [take] this energy that the French people have to go on the street and be turned to something good.”

Ultimately, pray for youth across France to have encounters with Jesus Christ and embrace the Gospel.
