For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
—Romans 15:4–6
After World War II, North Korea was established as an independent nation. Its leader, Kim Il Sung, outlawed all religions except the worship of himself as the “Great Leader.” The government destroyed churches and confiscated Bibles. Teaching children about Jesus became dangerous and remains dangerous today.
When North Korean Christians receive Bibles, which must be carefully smuggled into the country, they also receive hope, which helps them endure as Christ’s followers as they obediently and carefully share the gospel despite great risk of arrest and imprisonment.
Heavenly Father, as my Christian brothers and sisters in North Korea endure persecution, I ask that each one will have access to your Word so that they may find hope. Lord, may I not take the instruction of your Word for granted! Amen.
