“After we fled from our homes to this place, we couldn’t eat properly.”
That’s the situation Mary from Yelwata, Nigeria faced. She is just one of thousands of Christians forced to flee after violence swept through her northern Nigerian village. Militant Fulani herdsmen attacked the Christian community, killing hundreds and leaving many more displaced, forced to find shelter in makeshift camps.
But Mary’s story didn’t end there.
Through your support, Open Doors partners were able to offer immediate aid—and because of our long-term relationships and presence in the region, our partners have also been able to continue to walk alongside hurting believers.
I encourage you to read more about what an impact this partnership has made:
Violence is driving people like Mary out of their homes, leaving countless dead and shaking the stability of the church. It’s why Open Doors started the Arise Africa campaign, and why Christians in sub-Saharan Africa challenged all of us to raise a million voices of support and prayer.
When the violence is this big, our response has to be huge. If you haven’t already, would you consider signing our Arise Africa petition? We have until November 2nd to hit our goal and we’re so close!
One of the most powerful things we’ve heard from Nigerian believers is the healing they’ve found. Of course, they’re thankful for the urgent food and relief aid—but the long-term counseling support makes a lasting change, healing deeper wounds.
“I was so bitter … But after the trauma care program, all the bitterness, anger, and overthinking faded away,” Mary says. “I finally found peace.”
I hope you will continue to join me in prayer for these dear brothers and sisters. And not just for persecuted believers in Nigeria, but around the world!
