MATTHEW 9:36
"When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

Matthew 9:36 is a Bible verse where JESUS sees the crowds and feels deep compassion for them because they are weary, distressed, and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd, which leads to his instruction in the following verses to pray for more workers for the harvest.

Here’s the scenario….JESUS encounters large crowds. He is moved with compassion for them, a profound, gut-wrenching feeling. The People are "harassed and helpless, weary and scattered. They are described as "sheep without a shepherd," lacking guidance, care, and direction. This compassion prompts JESUS to tell his disciples that the harvest (of people) is great, but the workers are few, urging them to pray for more laborers (Matthew 9:37-38).

In essence, Matthew 9:36 highlights JESUS’ deep empathy for people’s spiritual suffering and lack of spiritual leadership, setting the stage for his call to action for His followers.

A Prayer for Compassion 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

Gracious and Loving FATHER GOD,
We come before You, inspired by the boundless compassion of JESUS, who welcomed all, healed the hurting, and loved without condition. We thank You for His example and for the gift of Your love that knows no boundaries.

Renew us, O LORD. Soften our hearts and open our eyes to see Your image in every person we meet. Help us to reach beyond our comfort zones, to listen deeply, and to love generously—especially when it is difficult. Give us courage to welcome the stranger, to embrace those whose lives are unfamiliar, and to seek wisdom and understanding across every divide.

May Your SPIRIT lead us to be Your instruments of peace, kindness and compassion in this world. Let us be known by our love, just as JESUS was, so that all people might taste and experience Your grace through us. We pray all of these in the compassionate Name of JESUS, Amen.
