1 JOHN 2:6 “whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.”
1 JOHN 2:24 “Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the SON and in the FATHER.”
1 John 2:24, calls believers to let the foundational truth they first heard—the Gospel message of CHRIST JESUS —remain deeply within them, leading to an abiding, intimate fellowship with both the SON and the FATHER, a promise of eternal life against deceivers. A good start centers on actively dwelling in these core teachings, not just knowing them, but to stay rooted in JESUS’ presence and teachings to avoid spiritual decline and drift.
And for us to abide, we need GOD’s SPIRIT to help retain and live out that initial, transformative truth, fostering a lasting, steadfast connection with the LORD.
Abide from the Beginning…
“From the beginning abide,” refers to the fundamental message of JESUS CHRIST’s life, death, and resurrection, the authentic Gospel that we first received. To “Let that abide in you" is a command to actively reside in, be saturated by, and be guided by these core truths, and not just intellectually understand them. When GOD’s children let this original message remain in their heart, mind, and actions, His child will "abide in the SON and in the FATHER," experiencing true communion and security.
In a world full of new ideas and distractions, we must intentionally return to the foundational purity and truths of the Gospel of GOD’s grace in order for us to stay connected to our Heavenly FATHER and our Savior JESUS CHRIST, preventing spiritual stagnation or deception.
1 JOHN 2:28 (ESV) “And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His coming.”
Prayer:
Heavenly FATHER, thank You for the precious, foundational truth of Your Son, JESUS, that I first heard and believed. I confess that I often get distracted and let new ideas or worldly concerns pull me away. LORD, I pray that Your Word, the original message of the Gospel, would not just be known by me, but would abide deeply within me, shaping my thoughts and actions. Help me to remain rooted in You, just as You remain in me. By Your SPIRIT, please empower me to live in that abiding relationship with You, the SON and the FATHER, today and always. In JESUS’ great and mighty Name, Amen.
