Thirty-seven years ago today, my life changed forever. I stood in Tiananmen Square with millions of students crying out for freedom. Then, in God’s sovereign providence, He spared my life just three days before the massacre. My then-girlfriend—now my wife of 33 years—fell ill from contaminated water, and we left. What man meant for evil, God turned into the largest spiritual revival in modern Chinese history.
The Tiananmen Massacre was 24 hours of horror. Yet today, the persecuted church faces that very same evil. Their stories are Tiananmen now. I am thinking especially of Pastor John Cao, Gao Zhisheng, Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri, Elder Li Yingqiang and Pastor Wang Yi, Pastor Yang Rongli, Dr. Wang Bingzhang, and Zhang Zhan.
Today we serve the persecuted church facing the very same evil that was unleashed 37 years ago.
In this new video, I share four enduring insights from that tragedy—principles that still point us forward in hope. Despite intensified persecution, I remain deeply optimistic: a greater awakening is coming to China.
