Jubilee Campaign to Host Four Parallel Events to the Upcoming UN Human Rights Council

Jubilee Campaign is pleased to announce that during the upcoming 46th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, we will be hosting four virtual parallel events focusing on a wide range of topics including Freedom of Religion or Belief, apostasy laws, abduction and forced conversion of religious minority girls, and justice and accountability. No Penalty for Apostasy
When: Monday, March 1, 2021 | 8:00 AM (Eastern)
What: However, several countries across continue to adopt and strictly implement laws that restrict the rights of individuals to freely adopt the religion of one’s choice.  This side-event is convened to raise the voices of those affected by laws and practices that punish individuals for leaving or adopting another religion, and to encourage states to work to see these laws repealed by looking at best practices.
Who: Speakers include UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, USCIRF Chair Gayle Manchin, Mauritanian blogger Cheikh Mkhaitir, Sudanese survivor of apostasy laws Mariam Ibraheem, ADF International's Tehmina Arora, and Iranian Christian convert Ladan
 
 
Grant Every Child Every Right in China
 
When: Tuesday, March 2, 2021 | 8:00 AM (Eastern)
 
What: This event will focus on how the People's Republic of China, namely under the Chinese Communist Party, derogates from its obligation as a state signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by banning religion and spiritual beliefs for all children in China. Specifically, this event will highlight the violations of the freedom of religion or belief of Christian, Uyghur, Tibetan Buddhist, and Falun Gong children in China.
 
Who: Speakers include USCIRF Commissioner Nury Turkel, ChinaAid President Bob Fu, as well as Uyghur, Falun Gong, and Christian witnesses to & survivors of persecution in China for their beliefs.
 
 
No One Left Behind
 
When: Friday, March 5, 2021 | 8:00 AM (Eastern)
What: The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a report in October 2020 documenting the interlinkage between human trafficking and forced marriages. In the same month in Pakistan, 13-year-old Catholic girl Arzoo Raja was kidnapped outside of her home in Karachi, Pakistan. Two days later, her parents were informed that Arzoo was forcibly converted and married to her kidnapper, the family's 40-year-old Muslim neighbor. This side-event is convened, to complement the report of the UNODC as well as the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) by lifting the voices of minority girls and women, with a focus on Egypt, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Justice and Accountability in Nigeria
 
When: Tuesday, March 9, 2021 | 8:00 AM (Eastern)
 
What: The United Nations since its foundation promised to dedicate itself to the maintenance of peace. It is therefore with great concern the international community receives weekly reports of violence and attacks in Nigeria. The ongoing terrorist attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram and other militia are adding to the dire humanitarian situation including large-scale displacement, and the risk of famine in north-east Nigeria. This event is convened to to encourage states to pass a resolution to initiate a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the ongoing atrocities and crimes against humanity in Nigeria - perpetrated by all sides - and start much needed evidence collection.
 
Who: Speakers include Baroness Cox of the UK, Honorary Tristan Azbej of Hungary, Alheri Magaji of RADi, Professor Sayo Ajiboye, Stephen Enada of International Committee on Nigeria, and UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions Agnès Callamard
