Remembering Thích Quảng Độ

(Midland, Texas—Feb. 27, 2020) We at ChinaAid share in the mourning of the death of renowned religious freedom advocate Patriarch Thích Quảng Độ.

Decades before he became the Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, he committed his life to standing up for the rights of people of all faiths. As an outspoken critic of the Communist Party, he became a symbol of the democracy movement in Vietnam. He suffered greatly for his nonviolent advocacy, living for four decades in prison, house arrest, and forced exile. The world has lost one of the loudest voices for democracy and human rights. Despite our religious differences, we stand in solidarity with the millions of freedom-loving people who will carry his legacy towards a more just future.

Bob Fu tweeted today, "So sorry to hear the loss of one of the world most fearless leaders for religious freedom/democracy/human rights in Vietnam Buddhist leader Thích Quảng Độ. He’s an intellectual leader and a unifying force in Vietnam. https://rafto.no/the-rafto-prize/thich-quang-do he stands up to Communist persecution!"
