Egypt (International Christian Concern) – Egypt has again delayed the court case for Soad Thabet, a Christian woman who was beaten and stripped by a mob four years ago. Her son was accused of having an affair with a divorced Muslim woman, and he was later sentenced to jail. Thabet was subsequently attacked, and some Christian homes were burned.
Three of the men responsible for these actions were charged and sentenced in absentia to ten-years in prison. However, those who lost their homes “reconciled” with the accused. Reconciliation sessions are often used by the authorities to keep Christians from seeking justice through the legal system. Such sessions also often result in the Christians losing at least some of their civil rights.
Thabet refused to engage in the reconciliation session, and has instead pursued justice through the legal system. Delays have been common throughout the entire process. The criminal court in Minya heard the case last week, but refused to rule on the issue. It was referred back to the appeal court in Beni Suef. Her lawyer expressed his shock at this latest development, and is currently waiting for the Beni Suef appeals court to establish a date for the new hearings.
