Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. (Ephesians 1:21 NLT)

What an encouraging reminder! The same Jesus who is sovereign over all things, is also the one who invites us to come to him with all our prayers and anxieties. Let’s give thanks that he is a king like no other, who always uses his authority for good.

Pray that God would change the hearts and minds of those in authority in India, so that they would work justly for the good of all citizens.

A few weeks ago, India’s Supreme Court decided to suspend a controversial law known as the sedition law.

This is a significant development, which activists have been demanding for years. However, we must now pray for this suspension to become permanent – especially since the government had only recently defended the law.

What is the sedition law?

The 152-year-old sedition law was designed to curb dissent against the Indian government, yet it is regularly used against people who stand up for human rights. Those targeted could face life imprisonment with a possible fine.

You may remember that this law was behind one of the charges against Father Stan Swamy, who spent decades speaking out for the rights of tribal communities in India’s Jharkand state. The 84-year-old Jesuit priest died last July while still in police custody.

No one else should have to suffer like Father Swamy, so please pray for the total repeal of this law. In summary:

  • Give thanks that the sedition law has been put on hold for the first time in 152 years.
  • Pray that those in authority decide to permanently repeal this controversial law, so that it can no longer be used against those who challenge injustice.
  • Pray that this decision will pave the way for citizens to speak out without fear of imprisonment or other consequences.
