Turkey (International Christian Concern) — In many Turkish cities, shopping centers, streets, and businesses are beautifully illuminated with holiday lights, “New Year’s” trees, and other decorations this month.
Many Turks celebrate New Year’s, even though they do not observe Christmas or the birth of Jesus. There is a gap in society over New Year’s celebrations, and many people are unaware that Christmas and New Year’s are two distinct holidays. Furthermore, many conservative Islamic organizations strongly advise Muslims not to celebrate New Year’s and there are even media campaigns opposed to it in some regions of the nation.
Christians in Turkey have a great chance at this time of year to proclaim the gospel and help dispel some of the misunderstandings about Christianity, Christmas, and the birth of Christ. Many people are open and curious, and churches all over the country are hosting Christmas outreaches both large and small.
Some churches have submitted applications to local governments to use larger spaces, such as banquet halls or cultural centers. Permissions are usually granted. Several churches on crowded pedestrian streets can hand out New Testaments to hundreds of visitors. Most church celebrations are open to the public and draw very large crowds.
HOW TO PRAY: Pray for Christians across Turkey to share the gospel effectively in this season. Pray for protection for churches through the New Year. Pray for equal rights for believers in Turkey. Let us pray that the Lord would protect Christmas celebrations and gatherings across the country and that the light of Christ would shine brightly in this season.
